It is with great sadness and regret that we announce the passing of our former partner and friend Hy Shandling. In a statement on behalf of Duncan Craig, Managing Partner of Duncan Craig, Darren Bieganek, QC, describes Hy as “a kind and considerate man and a brilliant lawyer. We were privileged to have him as a member of the firm. His memory will live on but he will be truly missed.” In 1986 Duncan Craig merged with the Cooke Shandling law firm. The firm of Cooke Shandling was well respected in Edmonton for its service to the community for over a quarter century. When asked by those who worked with Hy to describe their experiences, they were consistent in their admiration and respect. Hy was a great mentor to many Duncan Craig lawyers and was known in the legal profession as a lawyer who practiced with integrity and the highest of ethical standards. Even though he was generally known more for his outstanding litigation skills, over his long career Hy also provided advice to his clients with respect to their business deals. When he retired from practice, Hy continued to come to the office to help mentor the lawyers, conduct research and help solve complex issues.
