Student Program at DCLLP
Duncan Craig LLP has a unique and fulfilling summer and articling student program developed by our established Student and Articling Committees. As we learn and grow with the needs of student groups each year, we continue to evolve and elevate our program to bring high value to your experience at the Firm. The contributions made by our students provide the firm the chance to improve our program and mentorship every year, keeping us at the forefront of choice when determining where to begin your career. Students are important members of the firm and are supported and encouraged throughout their learning years to challenge themselves and maximize learning opportunities so that they can develop into confident lawyers.
Structured Articling Program with Practice Rotations
Our program consists of a formal rotation between litigation and solicitor practice areas, ensuring students gain experience in different areas of law. Each rotation includes a relocation of the student’s office, providing a better understanding of the daily experiences of lawyers in each practice group.
Articling students can expect to:
- Conduct legal research and writing
- Draft correspondence, contracts, and legal documents
- Attend meetings, transaction closings, court applications, and questionings
- Participate in chambers applications and document filings at the Alberta courts
Through this experience, students become comfortable attending and speaking in court, building essential advocacy skills.
Performance Reviews & Feedback
Students receive two formal reviews with the Articling Committee, where they receive partner feedback on their work and have the opportunity to discuss their experiences.
Firm Culture & Social Engagement
Duncan Craig LLP encourages articling students to actively participate in firm social events, allowing them to connect with partners, associates, and staff in a more informal setting.
Hireback Policy
Duncan Craig LLP hires students with the goal of retaining them as associates and developing them into future partners.
- There is no set number of articling students hired annually; typically, two to three students are brought on each year
- The decision to hire associates is based on fit with the firm and available work in specific practice areas rather than a fixed quota
Additional Benefits of Articling at DCLLP
PREP Day for CPLED Students
Articling students enrolled in the PREP Program receive one full day off per week to focus on PREP assignments from home.
Principals & Mentorship
Each student is assigned a principal, in accordance with the Rules of the Law Society of Alberta.
The Articling Committee carefully pairs each student with a principal who has the time, energy, and personality to provide effective mentorship. Students and principals are encouraged to meet regularly to discuss workload, legal experiences, and any challenges or questions that arise.
